Taiwan's electricity consumption reaches new high amid unrelenting heat wave

Xinhua, July 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

Electricity consumption in Taiwan hit a record high on Wednesday as temperatures in Taipei climbed to 38.5 degrees Celsius around 1 p.m., according to a statement from Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower).

Peak electricity consumption hit 35.821 million kilowatts at 1:46 p.m., smashing the previous record of 35.56 million kilowatts set on July 6, the statement said.

A heat wave has grilled Taiwan since July 19, with mercury in Taipei hitting around 37 degrees Celsius almost every day at midday, according to the island's weather agency.

Other parts of Taiwan are also experiencing high temperatures as high pressure from the Pacific Ocean continues to affect the island.

According to Taipower, the percentage of operating reserves dropped to an alarming 4.31 percent on Wednesday. Endi
