Xinhua, July 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Afghan security forces have killed a key Islamic State (IS) militants' leader in the country's eastern province of Nangarhar, the provincial government said on Tuesday.

"Saad Emarati was killed during a direct clash with the Afghan Special Forces in Sarr-y-Bazaar locality of Kot district late on Monday," it said in a statement.

Emarati served as deputy military chief of the IS outfit and he was recently leading the fight against government forces in Kot district, according to the statement.

Nangarhar province with Jalalabad city as its capital, 120 km east of Kabul, has been the scene of clashes between security forces and IS militants since the emergence of IS in early 2015.

The militant group has yet to make comments. Enditem
