Slovenian, Bulgarian presidents expect closer cooperation

Xinhua, July 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

Slovenian President Borut Pahor and his visiting Bulgarian counterpart Rosen Plevneliev called for closer economic cooperation between their countries on Monday.

Pahor told the press after their meeting at Brdo Pri Kranju, some 35 km away from Ljubljana, that the political cooperation was excellent and the economic ties had also improved.

The pair discussed topical issues in the European Union (EU). Pahor said they agreed that having strong European institutions was very important for successfully overcoming the current challenges, which were related not only to the economic and migration crisis, but also to security.

"We both feel that it would be very important when facing these challenges if these institutions were stronger and more responsive," Pahor said.

Plevneliev added that countries should not retreat behind their borders as this would "push us centuries back."

"Responsibility must not be shifted from one country to another, we must resolve this issue together," he said. Endit
