Jordan's unemployment rate rises to 14.7 percent in Q2

Xinhua, July 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

Jordan's unemployment rate rose to 14.7 percent in the second quarter of 2016, according to official figures released Monday.

The rate was 2.8 percentage points higher than that of the same period of last year.

Unemployment among men reached 13 percent in the second quarter, while among women it stood at 23 percent, according to figures released by the Department of Statistics, of which a copy was obtained by Xinhua.

The figures show that the jobless rate among holders of university degrees stood at 18.6 percent.

Jordan, overwhelmed by an influx of some 1.3 million Syrian refugees, announced recently a deal with the European Union to facilitate the export of Jordanian products to European countries, in a bid to help create jobs for Jordanians and Syrians, of whom thousands work illegally in the country.

The figures were based on a survey of 13,000 families across Jordan's 12 governorates, covering both rural and urban areas. Endit
