Illegal football e-betting ring smashed in Athens: media

Greek police has launched a wide operation to dismantle a criminal organization involved in illegal on line football betting, Greek media reported on Saturday.

So far some 130 suspects have been apprehended in Athens, among them three Greeks and 125 Asians, mostly Taiwanese, according to the reports.

The alleged ring had set up a network of electronic equipment in houses in affluent Athens suburbs taking bets on the recent Euro 2016 games held in France as well as matches across the world, SKAI TV reported, citing police sources.

More than 120,000 euros (131,700 U.S. dollars) were found inside a safe, and were seized along computers and notebooks, according to the reports.

Greek media stressed that recently Greek Police had participated in an international operation coordinated by Interpol against illegal gambling. The operation was carried out during the 2016 Euro and among participating countries were also Italy, China, Vietnam, Thailand and Singapore. Endit
