David Moyes appointed as Sunderland's new manager

Xinhua, July 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

Sunderland confirmed on Saturday the appointment of David Moyes to replace Sam Allardyce as its new boss.

Moyes, 53, has signed a four-year deal.

Speaking about the appointment, Ellis Short, chairman of the Premier League club, said they are "absolutely delighted to welcome David Moyes to Sunderland, who was by far and away our first choice".

"I am delighted to have joined Sunderland. I am relishing the challenge and excited by the opportunity," Moyes said as quoted in an official statement by the club.

The Scot began his managerial career with Preston in 1998. But it was in Everton where he made a good reputation.

Moyes took the challenge as Manchester United boss when Alex Furguson retired in 2013. But he was sacked after a disappointing 2013-2014 campaign. He then moved to Spain to work with Real Sociedad, where his achievements included a famous 1-0 win over Barcelona.

"I have taken over a big British club with a great support and I'm looking forward to working in the Premier League again," said Moyes. Endit
