South African stocks close up assisted by commodities

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) closed slightly higher on Friday, ending a week that had been topsy-turvy for the local markets.

At 5:52 p.m. local time, the rand was at R14.3525 to the dollar from R14.2281 at the previous close after touching its firmest intraday level of R14.167 in morning trade.

The all share closed 0.06 percent up at 53,005.20 points and the blue-chip top 40 added 0.03percent. The gold index rose 1.75 percent, South African listed property firmed 0.57 percent and financials gained 0.34 percent. Resources shed 1.03 percent and platinums lost 0.84 percent.

Anglo American also felt the cold as it lost 3.34 percent to trade at R144.30 per share.

ArcelorMittal closed 1.10 percent lower at R8.11. The company said in a trading update on Friday it expected its interim headline loss per share to widen by up to 75 percent.

AngloGold Ashanti added 3.01percent to R303.94 following the earlier release of a better-than-expected trading update.

Shoprite ended a solid week 3.59 percent higher at R199.49. Endit
