Xinhua, July 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least seven people died and another 11 were injured on Thursday after a fire broke out in a rehabilitation center for people with addiction problems in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil, informed the Civil Police.

The entity reported that the fire broke out in the early hours Thursday morning in Arroio dos Ratos, around 70 kilometers from the regional capital of Porto Alegre. The cause is still unknown.

The Civil Police are working on the assumption that some of the patients wanted to cause a riot in order to escape from the center.

All the victims were male, six died at the scene and another one passed away on the way to hospital.

According to the preliminary investigations, the deceased were found in locked rooms and for that reason were unable to escape while those who were able to escape managed to do so by breaking windows. Endit
