Thai Charter Draft Committee not join public debate

Xinhua, July 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

Thai Charter Draft Committee (CDC) Wednesday declined to join the public debate on the draft constitution staged by the Election Commission (EC) ahead of a referendum on August 7.

CDC Chairman Meechai Ruchupan said people would be more interested in contents of the charter than rhetoric on it, addressing that CDC is not in a role to argue with anyone about the charter, but to explain it to the public.

Meechai saw the information dissemination as the top priority before the referendum, noting that if there are distortions or misunderstanding about any parts of the draft, the CDC would try to make the clarifications.

The EC has planned ten debates from July 25 to August 5 which are to be broadcast by Thai PBS from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. free of charges.

As an act to encourage public participation in a fair debate, both supporters and opponents of the charter draft are allowed to join it.

Thailand is to hold the referendum on the draft constitution on August 7 to replace the current interim constitution adopted in July 2014. Endit
