1st Ld Writethru: 5.0-magnitude quake hits eastern Japan

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.0 struck eastern Japan on Wednesday, the weather agency said.

The quake, registering 4 on the Japanese seismic scale which peaks at 7, occurred at 7:25 a.m. local time in southern parts of Ibaraki prefecture, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The weather agency said the epicenter of the quake was at a latitude of 36.1 degrees north and a longitude of 140.0 degrees east and occurred at depth of 50 kilometers.

The tremor also shook other eastern Japanese area including Tokyo and Chiba.

No major damage or injuries were so far reported and no tsunami warning was issued. Endit
