Zambia's electoral body on Monday lifted a suspension imposed on political party campaigns and has since called for peaceful campaigns ahead of month's general elections.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) imposed a 10-day suspension of political party campaigns on July 9 in Lusaka, the country's capital and Namwala district south of the country due to violence.
"The ECZ has lifted the 10-day suspension of political party campaigns that was invoked on July 9. The Commission is appealing for peaceful and violent free campaigns in the remaining days," Cris Akufuna, the electoral body's spokesperson said.
The electoral body, he said, will also be organizing a series of conflict prevention and management workshops for leaders of political parties at provincial and district levels with the support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) as a measure to curb violence that has marred campaigns in the run up to the August 11 general elections.
