Slovenian President Borut Pahor has called on Turkish authorities to show restraint after a failed coup in Turkey that began last Friday and was crushed the next day.
It is important for the country as well as peace and stability in the region that "democratically elected authorities do not exceed their powers in addressing the consequences of the coup," he was quoted by Slovenian Press Agency as saying on Monday.
It is unacceptable for any army to interfere in a country's democratic life but if the action against the perpetrators of the coup attempt in Turkey is disproportionate, it will "undermine the trust of the international community" in the democratically elected authorities, which would "not benefit anyone", Pahor told a news conference which was also attended by Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili, who is currently on a visit to Slovenia.
A total of 7,543 people -- 6,038 soldiers, 755 judges and prosecutors, 100 police officers and 650 civilians -- have been detained following the failed coup in Turkey, Turkey's Prime Minister Binali Yildirim told a press conference on Monday. Endit
