Up to nine Taliban militants were killed as clash flared up in Jawand district of the western Badghis province on Saturday, provincial police chief Abdul Rauf Taj said Sunday.

"The clash erupted after Taliban rebels attacked security checkpoints outside main bazaar in Jawand district yesterday afternoon and police retaliated killing nine rebels, forcing others to flee," Taj told Xinhua.

Taliban commander Sheikh Ahmad who had also served as shadow deputy governor for Badghis province was injured in the firefight which lasted for some 10 hours, the official added.

However, the official didn't say if there were casualties on security personnel.
