Britain to keep monitoring situation in Turkey in wake of coup

Xinhua, July 17, 2016 Adjust font size:

The British government said Saturday it will continue monitoring the situation in Turkey and reviewing its travel advice for the country after the failed coup there.

Noting that the picture is still developing, officials discussed the coup attempt Saturday and "the potential internal and regional repercussions," said a government spokesperson.

Britain has updated its travel advice, saying the situation in Turkey appears to be calming down but remains potentially volatile.

British officials considered the impact on the bilateral relationship and "agreed on the importance of maintaining the close cooperation on security and counterterrorism" with Turkey, said the spokesperson.

On Friday, part of Turkey's army launched a failed coup to oust President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, leading to at least 161 deaths and the arrest of 2,839 members of the military. Endi
