EU publishes proposals to simplify technical regulations for TTIP

Xinhua, July 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

The European Union (EU) on Thursday published nine proposals representing the EU's negotiating position to simplify technical regulations in the trade deal of Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) with the United States.

The Commission said it made these proposals public only days after submitting them to the negotiating partners in a bid to pursue a more transparent trade and investment policy.

The EU stressed that the proposals are intended to simplify technical regulations "without lowering standards" and to set global rules of trade.

And the published texts represent the EU's negotiating position on regulatory cooperation in the sectors of cosmetics, medical devices, cars, chemicals and textiles.

Analysts predicted that the ongoing 14 round TTIP negotiation focusing on regulatory cooperation in Brussels wouldn't make breakthrough because the two sides were stuck on agriculture, services, and public procurement chapters.

Many believed the trade deal negotiations wouldn't be concluded by the year 2016, because of Washington's reluctance to make concessions. Endit
