Tokyo shares close higher by break on strong U.S. stocks, stimulus hopes

Tokyo shares closed higher Thursday morning on strong U.S. stocks overnight as well as market expectations of new fiscal and monetary stimulus measures taken by the government and the central bank.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 123.87 points, or 0.76 percent, from Wednesday to 16,355.30.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 9.73 points, or 0.75 percent, to 1,309.99.

Gainers were led by miscellaneous product, construction and nonferrous metal issues. Endit
