Brazil great Falcao named Internacional coach

Xinhua, July 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Brazil great Paulo Roberto Falcao has been appointed coach of his former club Internacional, the Porto Alegre outfit announced on Wednesday.

Falcao, 62, replaces Argel, who was sacked after the club's 1-0 defeat to Internacional in Brazil's Serie A championship on Sunday.

"Paulo Roberto Falcao will take charge of the Colorada on Sunday against Palmeiras," Internacional said in a statement on its official website.

Falcao has been out of work since being sacked by Sport Recife in April. It will be his third spell in charge of Internacional, having also led the club in 1993 and 2011.

Despite failing to win a World Cup, Falcao is widely regarded as one of Brazil's greatest ever players.

He was part of the Selecao's celebrated midfield - also featuring Zico, Socrates, Junior and Toninho Cerezo - that lost to eventual winners Italy in the quarterfinals of the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

As a coach Falcao has had less success, briefly leading Brazil's national team in 1990 and 1991 before unspectacular spells in charge of America (Mexico), Internacional, Japan's national team, Bahia and Sport. Endit
