French president congratulates Theresa May after her appointment as British PM

French President Francois Hollande called Theresa May on Wednesday evening to congratulate her appointment as British prime minister , the Elysee said in a statement on Wednesday.

The two leaders pledged to actively promote the development of bilateral friendly relations between France and Britain in all areas, according the Elysee.

Hollande reiterated his hope that the negotiations for Britain's leaving the European Union are launched as soon as possible, added the statement.

Former British Home Secretary Theresa May became prime minister on Wednesday after an audience with Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. She becomes the 13th prime minister of the Queen's reign. Endit
