Copenhagen Airport reports busiest ever June

Xinhua, July 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

The airport in Denmark's capital city on Tuesday reported its busiest ever June, with more than 2.7 million travelers passing through its terminals during the month.

The number of passengers at Copenhagen Airport in June rose 9 percent as compared to the same period last year, making it the busiest ever start to the summer, the airport said in a statement.

While intercontinental traffic and European traffic increased by 12.8 percent and 8.9 percent respectively, domestic traffic at the airport saw a 4.7 percent rise as well.

"We have had an unusually busy start to the summer period, and on several days in June we saw for the first time more than 100,000 passengers pass through the terminals," said Thomas Woldbye, chief executive officer of the airport.

In the first six months of the year, the airport saw the total number of passengers grew by 11 percent year-on-year to 13.7 million.

According to the airport, a significant part of the 11 percent growth was generated by an increase in the number of foreign tourists choosing Denmark as their destination because of the many new routes in recent years.

One of the favorite destinations is Spain with a 30 percent increase in passenger numbers in the first half year.

"We can see that passengers have really taken advantage of the additional capacity offered by the airlines on routes to Spain. That is a good example of how more flights to a destination also make more passengers choose to travel to that destination," Woldbye added.

Copenhagen Airport is currently the busiest airport in Scandinavia, having served some 26.6 million passengers in 2015. In early July, Copenhagen Airport was awarded the most efficient airport in Europe for the tenth time in 12 years by the international and independent group Air Transport Research Society. Endit
