Douglas Costa to miss Rio Olympics

Xinhua, July 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

Bayern Munich winger Douglas Costa has been ruled out of the Brazil squad for next month's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro due to a leg injury.

The 25-year-old has yet to recover from a thigh strain that forced him out of last month's centenary edition of the Copa America, the Bundesliga club said on Monday.

"I greatly regret this," Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said in a club statement. "We all wanted Douglas to contest the Olympic Games in his home country, but the player's health and fitness takes priority."

Costa, capped 16 times for Brazil, scored seven times in 43 matches for Bayern Munich last season after joining the club from Shakhtar Donetsk.

He was one of three players over the age of 23 selected by Brazil for the Olympic tournament, to be played from August 3-20. Endit
