2nd LD Writethru: Theresa May becomes Conservative Party leader "with immediate effect"

British Home Secretary Theresa May was confirmed as the new leader of the Conservative Party "with immediate effect," the chairman of the Conservative 1922 committee Graham Brady announced Monday.

May will formally become the new prime minister after current Prime Minister David Cameron offers his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday.

Addressing members of the Parliament outside the House of Commons, May said she is "honored and humbled" to be chosen by the Conservatives as their leader.

She also reiterated her "three priorities" in her leadership bid: the need for strong leadership, the need for unity, and the need for a vision for the future and for a Britain that works for everyone.

Pledging to deliver the results of the Brexit vote, she continued: "Brexit means brexit and we will make a success of it."

"We need to reunite our country and we need a strong new positive vision for the future of our country, a vision of a country that works not for the privileged view but that work for every one of us," she said.

"We are going to give people more control over their lives. That is how, together we will build a better Britain," added May. Endit
