Sammer steps down as Bayern's sporting director

Bayern Munich and Matthias Sammer have agreed mutually to part ways with immediate effect, the German giants confirmed in an official statement on Sunday.

The "Bavarians" have corresponded to Sammer's wish to resign as sporting director despite a contract stipulated until June 2018.

"We understand Matthias Sammer's wish and have therefore decided to correspond to it," Bayern Munich's president Karl Hopfner said. "Since Matthias Sammer took the position of the sporting director in 2012, Bayern experienced a very successful time."

Sammer was diagnosed with a "tiny circulatory disorder of the brain" in 2016 and missed the closing period of the Bundeslig season 2015-2016. However, despite being fully recovered, the former sporting director decided to resign.

"I thank the FC Bayern Munich, and those I was able to work with, for understanding my decision," Sammer said. "The team has won ten major titles during this time and that, with a great dominance and constancy. It was an incredible experience. I say goodbye for now to all the fans, and those who have accompanied me. It was an honor."

The vacant position of the sporting director "will not be filled for the time being", said Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

The Bundesliga record champions and titleholders clash with Werder Bremen to kick-off the season 2016-2017 on August 26. Endit
