U.S. offers support to bolster Bangladesh capacity in fighting militancy

The United States has expressed its keenness to support Bangladesh bolster its capacity in fighting terrorism and militancy.

In the wake of two terror attacks of earlier this month, visiting U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal expressed her government's keenness to support Bangladesh while meeting Bangladesh high-ups in a meeting here on Sunday.

"We will continue our assistance in combating the global threat of terrorism that our countries both confront," she was quoted as saying in a press statement of the U.S. embassy here.

"Our commitment to Bangladesh remains as robust as ever," she informed the meeting in which, among others, Bangladeshi Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque were present.

After the meeting, Haque said she reaffirmed different types of U.S. support that he did not elaborate on.

A total of 22 people including 18 foreigners and 2 police officers were killed in Bangladsh's first-ever hostage crisis in calital Dhaka on July 1.

Less than a week after the hostage crisis at a Spanish cafe in capital Dhaka, Bangladesh suffered another blow as gunmen exploded bombs and exchanged fire with police near the country's largest Eid congrgation venue, leaving 4 including two police constables and an attacker killed. Enditem
