Senior households relying on gov't living allowances reach record high in Japan

Statistics from Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare on Wednesday showed that senior households relying on basic living allowances from the government as of April reached new record high.

The number of households relying on basic living allowances from the government as of April reached 1,632,271, down by 3,122 compared to the previous month, said the ministry.

Meanwhile, the number of households with seniors aged above 65 relying on government allowances reached new record high of 830,512, accounting for 51.1 percent of the total.

Among the senior households relying on government allowances, those comprising only one person accounted for 90.5 percent of the total.

Japan has the largest aged society in the world, with 26.7 percent of its proportion aged 65 or above in 2015, according to a recent national census. Endit
