Cuban volleyball players detained on suspicion of rape in Finland

At least eight members of the Cuban national volleyball team were detained in Tampere, central southern Finland on alleged rape, media reported on Sunday.

The team was participating in the games of the ongoing World Volleyball League. Senior investigator Joni Lansipuro told national broadcaster Yle that there was one victim.

The arrests took place in stages. The first three were detained before a match between Cuban team and Finnish team on Saturday, one detained on Sunday morning and three after another match Cuba played on Sunday.

The Cuban team was supposed to leave Finland on Monday. A court must decide whether to keep the suspects in detention or set them free.

Matti Tolvanen, professor of criminal law in the University of Eastern Finland, told Yle that allegations of criminality among sports persons of this level is rare in Finland. Endit
