Mexico condemns terrorist attack in Bangladesh

Xinhua, July 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

Mexico on Saturday condemned the deadly attack on a restaurant in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka, which claimed the lives of 20 people.

"The government of Mexico ... condemns the taking of hostages and the attack perpetrated by a group of armed men in Bangladesh, which led to the death of people of diverse nationalities, including citizens of Bangladesh, India, Italy and Japan," the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a press release.

The ministry also "reiterated its condemnation of terrorism in all its forms."

The siege began Friday when armed militants reportedly linked to Islamic State (IS) attacked a restaurant in the capital's upscale diplomatic district and took some 35 patrons and staff hostage, killing 20.

After a more than 10-hour stand off, Bangladeshi army commandos stormed the building, rescuing 13 of the hostages -- including one Japanese and two Sri Lankans -- and killing six of the gunmen.

A seventh attacker was taken into custody, according to media reports.

At least 40 people, including senior police officials, were injured in the incident.

The IS has claimed responsibility for the attack. Enditem
