Sri Lanka appoints new Central Bank chief

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Saturday appointed Indrajit Coomaraswamy as the country's new Central Bank governor.

"After consulting all parties concerned, I appointed top economist Indrajith Coomaraswamy to lead the Central Bank of Sri Lanka," President Sirisena said on his Twitter account.

Coomaraswamy was director of Economic Affairs at the Commonwealth Secretariat, and had also worked in Sri Lanka's Central Bank and Treasury.

The appointment ended days of speculation after the government failed to name a new governor immediately after former governor Arjuna Mahendran did not seek a reappointment.

Mahendran, the former Central Bank chief since January 2015, ended his term last week amid a corruption investigation. He however has denied any wrongdoing. Endit
