Two killed, 20 others injured as classroom collapses in Nepalese capital

Xinhua, July 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

Two school girls were killed and other 20 students injured when their classroom at a local boarding school collapsed due to torrential rain in the Nepalese capital Kathmandu on Friday afternoon, officials said.

The classroom wall crumbled and fell upon the 22 kids due to torrential rain when they were attending class at their Pushpanjali Boarding School in Lalitpur District.

One of the victims breathed her last on the spot while another was pronounced dead during treatment at the B&B Hospital in Lalitpur District, Chief District Officer Rishiram Sharma told local Xinhua.

The injured students are now receiving treatment at Lalitpur-based B&B and Patan Hospitals, Sharma said.

With the surge of monsoon since Thursday, Nepal has been witnessing heavy rainfalls various parts of the country.

Officials at the Nepalese Meteorological Forecasting Division said that the weather is cloudy throughout the nation and the same weather pattern may continue for next few days.

"The moisture-laden winds arising mostly from the Bay of Bengal and partly from Arabian Sea has caused rainfall in the southern parts of the Himalayas including Nepal and it is likely to continue until next few days," Meteorologist Shanti Kandel told local media. Endit
