Briton accused of murder of Kenyan freed on 20,000 USD bail

A Kenyan court on Thursday released a Briton who is facing murder charges on 20,000 U.S. dollars cash bail with two sureties of similar amounts.

Richard David Alden who is a former chief executive officer of pan African internet service provider, Wananchi Group, was ordered to report to the police station twice a week and surrender his passport pending the hearing of his case.

The High Court dismissed the prosecution's application against bail, saying reasons given against the release of the 53 year-old Alden, accused of murdering a Kenyan woman, were not compelling.

High Court judge Jessie Lesiit said the Briton is not a flight risk and noted that Alden expressed readiness to comply with bail conditions. Lesiit also directed the accused to reveal where he will be staying as the trial proceeds.

The Briton is accused of killing Grace Wangechi at his home in Nairobi early June. He has denied killing Wangezi.

The police said the Briton and the 42 year-old Wangeci have been running an athletics agency, which procured athletes to compete internationally.

Alden has been in the country since 2015 and his work permit was to expire in December 2017. He is also expected to be charged with being in possession of a firearm without a licence.

Five witnesses have been listed in the charge sheet as witnesses to testify against the accused who will appear before the magistrate court on July 5 to answer to the charges. Endit
