The Egyptian military achieved significant results in combating border smuggling, infiltration and illegal migration between June 18 and June 26, army spokesman Mohamed Samir said in a statement Thursday.

In the country's restive North Sinai governorate, the army destroyed a new smuggling tunnel on the border with the Palestinian Gaza Strip which was detected by border guards, according to the statement.

In the western military zone, the border guards, along with air forces, managed to destroy two vehicles and seize another eight loaded with 602,500 pills of tamol, 386,000 pills of tramadol and 7,740 packets of cigarettes, the spokesman noted.

In Salloum, a village near the Mediterranean east of the border with Libya, 208 illegal migrants of different nationalities and two vehicles with 14,980 pills of tramadol were seized, he added.

Speaking about the southern military zone near Sudan, Samir said the border guards have seized two vehicles containing 295 pistols. Endit
