German unemployment continues to fall in June

Xinhua, June 30, 2016 Adjust font size:

German unemployment continued to fall in June, keeping the country's jobless rate at record low level, official data showed on Thursday.

Adjusted for calendar and seasonal swings, the number of unemployed people in Germany declined by 6,000 to 2.69 million in June, said the German Federal Labor Agency.

The jobless rate remained unchanged at 6.1 percent, the lowest level since Germany's reunification in 1990.

"The labor market continues to develop positively," said Frank-Juergen Weise, head of the labor agency, "Demand for labor remains high."

Germany's jobless rate is among the lowest in the eurozone. A stable labor market helps to drive the German growth as Europe's biggest economy is increasingly relying on demand from home.

A separate report from the German federal statistics office on Thursday showed that, measured by standards of the International Labour Organization, Germany's unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.2 percent in May. Endit
