Sudan redeploys troops on border to refresh ties with south neighbor

Sudanese army announced Sunday completion of redeployment of its troops outside the demilitarized zone on the border between Sudan and South Sudan, a spokesman said.
"The redeployment of the troops comes in implementation of the decisions by the joint Political and Security Committee between Sudan and South Sudan," Sudanese army spokesman Ahmed Khalifa Al-Shami said in a statement.
"Sudan declares completion of the redeployment of its troops outside the demilitarized zone and submission of a report to that effect to the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel on the 25th of June, 2016," he added.
Al-Shami also said that the move reiterates Khartoum's keenness to develop the ties with South Sudan and shift with them to a new phase of further military and security cooperation between the two countries.
On June 5, Sudan and South Sudan signed a package of security decisions stipulating immediate redeployment of the two countries' armies along the demilitarized border area, adoption of a plan to stop supporting and sheltering the rebels and opening of border passages.
The border issue represents one of the biggest obstacles hindering the settlement of differences between Sudan and South Sudan. Endit
