Morocco busts IS-linked terror cell near Algerian border

Xinhua, June 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

Morocco's security services dismantled a ten-member terror cell linked to the Islamic State (IS) group on Friday near Algerian borders.

The suspects had monitored a large shopping center in Oujda in order to commit a robbery in order to fund terrorist projects in the Kingdom, in line with IS agenda, the Moroccan Interior Ministry pointed out in a statement.

Investigations revealed that the members of the terrorist cell, who held secret meetings in a "safe house" in the eastern city of Oujda, assaulted citizens and dispossessed them of their property, the statement said.

The suspects will be brought before justice after the completion of investigations conducted under the competent public prosecutor's office.

Morocco is facing a growing threat from IS group. The director of Morocco's Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation, Abdelhak El Khayam, revealed in May that Morocco has busted 29 terrorist cells that planned attacks against the North African kingdom in one year. Endit
