Pentagon confident U.S.-U.K. defense ties not affected by Brexit

The Pentagon said on Friday that Britain's exit from the European Union would not affect U.S.-U.K. defense ties as well as Britain's role as a strong NATO ally.

"The secretary reaffirmed that those bonds endure after yesterday's vote by the United Kingdom to exit the European Union," said Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook here at a briefing, quoting a readout of a phone call between U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter and his U.K. counterpart.

"The two leaders committed to work together to strengthen the international partnership that has helped ensure security for the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe and the world," said Cook.

Cook also said the Pentagon remained "very confident" that Britain would continue to be a strong ally within the NATO and the NATO alliance would be able to address this particular situation.

The British "Leave" camp has won the historic referendum held on Thursday by obtaining 52 percent of ballots, pulling the country out of the bloc after 43 years of membership. Enditem
