Bulgaria, Greece sign gas interconnection agreement

Xinhua, June 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

The gas transmission system operators of Bulgaria and Greece, Bulgartransgaz EAD and DESFA S.A., signed an interconnection agreement on Friday, officials said.

"This is the first important step towards the diversification of the Bulgarian natural gas market," Bulgaria's Bulgartransgaz said in a statement on its website.

Currently, Bulgaria relies on Russia for 96 percent of its gas needs through a single pipeline passing through Ukraine.

The agreement provided a possibility for reverse virtual natural gas transmission on the Bulgarian-Greek border for users on the territory of Bulgaria, the statement said.

Virtual gas is an alternative method of transporting natural gas to areas where there are no pipeline networks.

A possibility for the virtual supply of natural gas quantities from the Revithoussa liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Greece was provided, the statement said.

The agreement was signed for an initial test period of three months starting from July 1, 2016, Bulgartransgaz said. Endit
