Xinhua, June 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

Police in Vietnam's southern Tay Ninh province on Thursday detained six local people for having operated an online football betting ring worth 1.4 million U.S. dollars.

The ring was led by a 27-year-old woman named Thai Thi Mong Kieu from Ho Chi Minh City and a 38-year-old man named Lai Xuan Hoai from Tay Ninh, the provincial Police Department announced.

They were charged with running gambling organization.

From June 1 till their arrest, Kieu, Hoai, four accomplices and bettors made total bets of nearly 32 billion Vietnamese dong (1.4 million U.S. dollars).

During the ongoing UEFA European Football Championship in France, Vietnamese police have detected some online football betting rings worth millions or dozens of millions of U.S. dollars each in several cities and provinces.

Gambling of all kinds, including betting, except in government licensed casinos, is illegal in Vietnam. Violators are subject to heavy fines and/or severe prison sentences. Enditem
