Tokyo shares close higher ahead of Brexit vote

Tokyo shares ended higher Thursday as market cautiously expected Britain to vote to remain in the European Union in an upcoming referendum.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 172.63 points, or 1.07 percent, from Wednesday at 16,238.35.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 14.10 points, or 1.10 percent, higher at 1,298.71.

Gainers were led by iron and steel, marine transportation and mining issues.

The day's turnover was about 1,570.1 billion yen (around 15.01 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
