6 militants killed in fresh drone strike in Afghanistan

Xinhua, June 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

About six militants were killed in latest U.S. drone strike in Afghanistan's northern province of Kunduz on Tuesday night, an army source said on Wednesday.

"Based on a confirmed tip-off, the international troops conducted an airstrike on a running vehicle in Ghro Qishlaq village, Imam Sahib district overnight, killing six militants," Abdul Khalil, a press officer of Afghan army's Division 20 Pamir stationed in the region, told Xinhua.

The targeted militants tried to assault security checkpoints at the area and their vehicle was destroyed in the attack, the source said.

The Afghan security forces have beefed up security operations against militants since early April after Taliban militants started their so-called annual spring offensive and step up attacks across the country.

In an unrelated development, a Taliban local leader named Mullah Abdullah Khash along with six Taliban fighters surrendered to Afghan army in the neighboring Badakhshan province on Tuesday, the army's 209 Shaeen Corps said in a statement.

The Taliban has yet to make comments. Enditem
