Namibia suspends pork importation from S. Africa

Xinhua, June 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

Namibia has halted the importation of pork and raw pork products from South Africa due to the outbreak of the African swine fever.

Acting Permanent Secretary for Agriculture, Water and Forestry Sophy Kasheeta said in a statement on Tuesday that the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) in South Africa "has officially reported an outbreak of African Swine Fever in the country."

She said her ministry has immediately suspended the importation of live pigs and raw pork from South Africa until the outbreak is adequately resolved.

According to Kasheeta, surveillance activities at the official border points will be increased to ensure that products entering Namibia do not pose an increased level of risk for the country's pork industry.

African swine fever virus causes haemorrhagic fever, with high mortality rates in pigs. Endit
