Tokyo stocks close higher as yen's surge halts, investors snap up bargains

Tokyo stocks closed higher Friday as a solid showing on Wall Street overnight coupled with a halt in the yen's rise against the U.S. dollar following the market's tumble a day earlier.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 165.52 points, or 1.07 percent, from Thursday to end the day at 15,599.66.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 9.27 points, or 0.75 percent, to finish at 1,250.83.

Notable issues that advanced by the close of play comprised transportation equipment, mining and glass and ceramic product-linked stocks.

The day's turnover was 2,474.4 billion yen (23.70 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
