The following are news highlights in major South African media outlets on Thursday.

-- The rand firmed against the dollar in afternoon trade on Wednesday, having absorbed the Reserve Bank's current-account deficit data that came out worse than expected on Tuesday.

The deficit for the first quarter 2016 stands at 5% of GDP, which is much weaker than the market expectations of 4.3 percent. (Business Day)

-- South Africa has to thank its labour unions as well as big business for the country not having been downgraded to junk by the three ratings agencies recently, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Wednesday. (Fin24)
