S.Korea's ruling party regains majority with acceptance of independent lawmakers

Xinhua, June 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

South Korea's ruling Saenuri Party on Thursday regained its majority in the National Assembly as it decided to accept independent lawmakers who quitted the party after failing to win nominations in the April 13 parliamentary elections.

Four independent lawmakers, who were elected in the April election, returned to the Saenuri Party as senior party officials voted in favor of acceptance.

It raised the number of parliamentary seats of President Park Geun-hye's conservative party to 126, with three more widely expected to apply for their return to the party.

The number surpassed the main opposition Minjoo Party's 122 lawmakers in the 300-seat parliament. The newly launched People's Party took 38 seats in the April election, while the minor Justice Party won six seats. Enditem
