Xinhua, June 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

Some five militants had been killed after Afghan army launched an airstrike in the country's southern province of Uruzgan, the Afghan Defense Ministry said on Thursday.

"Personnel of Afghan National Army's air forces conducted an airstrike in Sangandaz village, Charchino district of Uruzgan province, killing five terrorists," the statement said without providing details.

The restive Uruzgan province has been the scene of heavy clashes between Taliban militants and security forces over the past couple of months.

Dozens of Taliban militants have been attacking security checkpoints in Charchino since weekend as they tried to seize the district.

Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since early April when the militant group launched its annual rebel offensive in different areas of the country.

The Taliban has yet to make comments. Endit
