Romania held by Switzerland 1-1 with late goal in 2016 EURO Group A (updated)

Forward Admir Mehmedi's ferocious volley helped Switzerland earn a 1-1 draw with Romania in their second round of 2016 EURO Group A games here at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday.

Romania led Switzerland 1-0 at halftime thanks to Bogdan Stancu's penalty after Switzerland captain Stephan Lichsteiner had pulled the shirt of Alexandru Chipciu in the area.

Stancu scored his second penalty of the tournament in the 18th minute from a low shot into the bottom left corner when he sent Swiss gatekeeper Yann Sommer the wrong way from the spot.

"We controlled the game in the first half, scored and had some more chances. But we suffered a lot in the second half and faced huge pressure from Switzerland," said Romanian coach Abghel Iordanescu.

Switzerland bounced back after 56 minutes when Mehmedi blasted an unstoppable strike across goal after Romania had made a mess of clearing Ricardo Rodriguez's corner.

"We created lots of chances but only managed to score one, unfortunately. I'm not concerned about the lack of goals. You have to get into those positions first," said Switzerland coach Vladimir Petkovic. "We'll now start looking forward to the France game and make sure we're as prepared as we can be for that."

Before this round, the two sides have met 12 times, splitting the record by winning five matches and drawing two each.

Switzerland will face France in Lille on Sunday, pursuing the points to guarantee their place in the playoff round. Endit
