Death toll in southern Ghana city flood rises to 10

Xinhua, June 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

The death toll in the flood in the southern Ghana city of Cape Coast, about 144 km west of the capital, has increased from five to 10, an official of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) said on Tuesday.

Sandy Amartey, Regional Coordinator of NADMO, said the flood followed four days of torrential rains which wreaked havoc in the coastal city.

According to him, while some of the victims were swept away by the strong running water, others were electrocuted, while the rest were hit accidentally by broken walls.

The bodies have been deposited at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

Officials of NADMO are still continuing with their assistance of the affected persons, Amartey told local media.

Ghana's coastal and middle belts have been experiencing continuous rains since early last week. Endit
