Chinese legal chief meets with U.S. attorney general

Xinhua, June 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

Meng Jianzhu, China's top official in charge of political and legal affairs, met with Loretta E. Lynch, attorney general of the United States, on Monday in Beijing.

Lynch has cut short her visit to Beijing for the Second China-U.S. High-Level Joint Dialogue on Cybercrime and Related Issues and is returning to Washington following Sunday's mass shooting at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

Meng, head of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, conveyed President Xi Jinping's condolences to U.S. President Barack Obama and the American people and voiced strong criticism of the brutal attack.

China stands firm against violent terrorism in any form and is willing to increase cooperation with the U.S. in this regard, Meng noted.

Lynch expressed regret that she could no longer participate in the meetings and was grateful for the Chinese side's understanding and support.

Meng also had a telephone conversation with U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, who had planned to join Lynch in Beijing. Endi
