Summer downpour triggers flooding in Cyprus

Xinhua, June 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

An unusually intense summer downpour caused flooding in four suburbs of the capital Nicosia, a Cypriot Fire Service spokesman said on Friday.

Leonidas Leonidou told the state television that the Fire Service received over 90 calls from distressed residents, most of whom needed help to pump water from flooded homes.

He said that firemen saved motorists who had been stranded in high water and were still working in the night to pump water from flooded premises.

Leonidou said that a few cars were washed by torrents but there were not life-threatening situations.

A weatherman said a seasonal depression caused a rain storm that lasted almost two hours. Endit
