Several hours of downpour in Ghana's capital, Accra, Thursday caused excessive flooding in several areas, again betraying the city's poor drainage system.
Many parts of the capital remained inaccessible following the downpour that left commuters stranded and drenched, and drivers of both commercial vehicles and private cars were overwhelmed by the subsequent flooding that took them unaware.
Xinhua reporter witnessed some vehicles that had been swept off the road and virtually submerged, while passengers frantically sought shelter in nearby bus stops, shops on high ground and buildings.
With the floodwaters reaching waist level in some areas, many drivers were compelled to park while others struggled through the rains despite severe flooding on some of the roads.
Officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), police and military were also seen standing by in readiness to rescue victims of the floods.
Latest reports by local media, Citifm, indicated that one person had died from the floods. Endit
