Denmark international Daniel Agger announces retirement

Xinhua, June 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

Daniel Agger, captain of Danish national football team, has announced his retirement at the age of 31.

"I'm pulling the plug," Agger told a press conference here on Thursday. "It has been difficult, I have had doubts until the end. But I have no doubt that it is the right decision."

The central defender was twice named as Denmark' s Player of the Year and is actually the country' s 24th highest goal scorer with 12.

He has earned over 70 caps and played for Denmark at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro2012.

Agger started his senior career with club Broendby in July 2004, winning the Danish Superliga and the Danish Cup before moving to Liverpool in 2006.

In all, he made 232 appearances for Liverpool and was part of the side that won the League Cup and Community Shield in England.

Agger left Liverpool in August 2014, moving back to Broendby for personal reasons.

He was however plagued with injuries through much of his career and after the season's last game for Broendby on May 29 he expressed uncertainty about whether he would continue his career.

"It's sad, but it is the right decision to stop. I'm proud of my career," he posted on Twitter on Thursday. Endit
