Fans pessimistic about China's World Cup chance: poll

Xinhua, June 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Fans don't believe that Chinese men's soccer team are able to reach the World Cup 2018 finals following two warm-up games against Trinidad and Tobago and Kazakhstan, according to a poll released on Wednesday.

Among over 5,000 voters in the online poll conducted by Chinese news portal Sina.com, 53.8 percent voted "no" on China's possibility of reaching World Cup 2018, while 19.7 percent said "yes". The remaining 26.5 percent voted "hard to say".

China lost to 10-man Kazakhstan 1-0 on Tuesday after beating Trinidad and Tobago 4-2 days ago.

Sitting at 81st in the FIFA rankings, China scraped through to the final phase of the Asian World Cup qualifying with a 2-0 victory over Qatar in March.

The Chinese men's team, having qualified for only one World Cup finals in 2002, will compete among the top 12 Asian teams in the qualifying matches from Spet. 1 this year to Sept. 5 next year. Endit
